ECOstorm® Hurricane Impact Windows: Miami-Dade & Broward County Approved

There are a lot of hurricane-approved windows on the market, but none that maximize protection and energy efficiency like ECOstorm® Coastal Windows. Our ECOstorm® hurricane impact windows are nearly impervious to the elements, combining durability, classic design, superb construction, and maintenance-free operation unlike anything else on the market. What Makes ECOstorm® Hurricane Impact Windows Different

ECOstorm® is our most powerful line, built for homeowners who need more than a standard replacement window. Every unit is engineered with fusion-welded, reinforced profiles and durable extruded PVC vinyl for superior resistance to high winds and airborne debris, in a window that’s proven to stand up to the harshest coastal conditions. ECOstorm® windows are approved for all Gulf and Atlantic coast regions, including Miami-Dade and Broward County, Florida, which have the toughest approval standards in the country. Custom grid patterns are available, an integral masonry flange can be added upon request, and BetterVue Lifetime Warranted fiberglass screens are included with every operable window.

How Impact Glass Protects Your Home

ECOstorm® windows are triple pane, reinforced by a laminate system similar to a car windshield but much, much thicker. While most window manufacturers use a 0.060″ shatterproof film, our hurricane windows feature an impressive 0.090″ to 0.105″ thick shatterproof interlayer, bonded between double-strength tempered glass panes. That combination of laminate, interlayer, and frame lets the glass flex and absorb a direct debris strike without opening a hole in your wall. The glass may crack, but it stays in the frame.

ECOstorm® Performance Ratings and Certifications

Our coastal windows are Miami-Dade and Broward County, Florida approved, and tested at a certified AAMA lab. All ECOstorm® windows are scrutinized and tested to commercial architectural standards and rated to endure conditions far more intense than most forces of nature. They carry a sound transmission class (STC) rating of 35 to 37, eliminating up to 50% more noise than a single-pane window. High-performance glass blocks 99% of harmful UV radiation and 98 to 100% of heat and cold transfer.

Where Hurricane Windows Are Required: Florida, Texas, and Coastal States

Miami-Dade and Broward County enforce Florida’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) code, the strictest wind-borne debris standard in the U.S., and ECOstorm® windows are approved for installation there. The rest of Florida’s coast, and most other Gulf and Atlantic coast counties, fall under wind-borne debris regions of the Florida and International Building Codes, which require either impact-rated windows or code-compliant shutters on every opening. In Texas, homes in the coastal counties covered by the Texas Department of Insurance’s windstorm inspection program typically need the same kind of wind-borne debris protection to qualify for windstorm coverage. Requirements vary by county and by how close a property sits to the coastline, so confirm the exact rule with your local building department or insurer before you order.

Situations Where Impact Windows Make Sense

  • New construction in a coastal wind-borne debris zone, where impact glass is often the simplest way to meet code.
  • Replacing aging windows after storm damage, or before the next storm season.
  • Insurance savings: impact windows may qualify a home for a wind-mitigation discount. Ask your insurer what it’s worth for your address.
  • Shutter-free protection: no hurricane shutters to install, store, or put up before a storm. ECOstorm® windows and sliding glass doors protect your home 24/7, storm or no storm.

Glass, Frame, and Grid Options

ECOstorm® windows come standard with double-strength tempered glass and a Class V hurricane-rated PVB interlayer. Glass packages are available in a range of styles and opacities, including Energy Star climate zone packages and Turtle Glass/Graylite for Gulf and Atlantic coast homes near sea turtle nesting grounds. Turtle Glass keeps window light from drawing hatchlings away from the water.

Frames are offered in Box, Box w/Fin, Box with Fin & J, and Masonry Flange styles, and an integral masonry flange is available upon request for masonry openings. Custom grid patterns are available too, so a hurricane-rated window doesn’t mean giving up on the look of the rest of your home.

Energy Efficiency and Noise Reduction

The IG (insulating glass) units in every ECOstorm® window create a high-performance thermal barrier, so the same laminate that protects you from flying debris also keeps conditioned air inside for years of energy savings. Combined with LoE3 366 glass and an Argon gas fill, ECOstorm® windows block 98 to 100% of heat and cold transfer, and the thick impact interlayer cuts outside noise by up to 50% compared with single-pane glass.

Warranty Coverage

ECOstorm® windows are backed by a transferable Double Lifetime Limited Warranty on vinyl, hardware, the IGU, and screens, plus 25-year coverage for accidental glass breakage. BetterVue Lifetime Warranted fiberglass screens are included with every operable window. A 10-year factory-applied exterior coating is available as an option.

Installation and Code Compliance

In a designated wind-borne debris or High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, ECOstorm® windows must be installed exactly per the product’s approval instructions. The fastening schedule and anchoring that earned the Miami-Dade/Broward and Florida Building Code approvals only apply when the window goes in the way the approval describes. Most coastal jurisdictions also require a permit and a final inspection before the installation is signed off, even on a straight replacement. Check with your local building department before you install, and keep your approval documents (the Notice of Acceptance or product approval number) on hand for the inspector.

Hurricane Windows FAQ

Is an impact window the same as a “storm window”?
Not exactly. “Storm windows” usually means a secondary panel mounted over an existing window. ECOstorm® impact windows are a single code-approved system that replaces the window entirely, with laminated glass built to resist wind-borne debris on its own. No second panel and no shutters are needed.

Are ECOstorm® windows approved for Miami-Dade and Broward County?
Yes. ECOstorm® windows are approved for installation along the entire Gulf and Atlantic coasts, including Miami-Dade and Broward County, Florida, which have the strictest wind-borne debris standard in the U.S.

Do I still need hurricane shutters if I install impact windows?
No. ECOstorm® windows and sliding glass doors are designed to protect your home from flying debris on their own, so there are no shutters to install or store.

Can impact windows lower my homeowners insurance?
Many insurers offer a wind-mitigation discount for impact-rated windows, but the amount varies by carrier and location. Ask your insurance agent what it would be worth on your policy.

Do I need a permit to install hurricane windows?
In most coastal jurisdictions, yes. A permit and final inspection are typically required, even for a like-for-like replacement. Check with your local building department before you install.

What warranty comes with ECOstorm® windows?
A transferable Double Lifetime Limited Warranty on vinyl, hardware, the IGU, and screens, with 25-year coverage for accidental glass breakage.
